The Surprising Health Benefits of Singing in a Choir
Why a good sing might just be the best medicine
At Featherstone Male Voice Choir, we’ve always said a good sing, a warm brew, and a bit of banter can work wonders. But did you know there’s real science behind how singing in a choir can boost your health?
Researchers at Bath University found that singing with others – like we do every Wednesday and Friday night – can actually improve your mental health. Singing releases oxytocin, often called the “cuddle hormone”, which helps to reduce stress, ease anxiety, and boost feelings of connection. No wonder we leave rehearsals grinning!
Joining a choir isn’t just about music – it’s about community. Learning new songs sharpens the brain, singing in harmony builds trust and teamwork, and having a regular commitment gets you out the house and into something joyful.
We’ve seen it firsthand: new lads joining us for a taster session, nervous at first, and within weeks they’re cracking jokes, singing loud and proud, and saying it’s the best thing they’ve done in years.
You don’t need to read music. You don’t need experience. You just need to love a good tune and be willing to give it a go.
So if you’re thinking about it – don’t overthink. Just turn up. You’ll be doing your head, your heart, and your health a world of good.
