What Happens at Rehearsal?

A behind-the-scenes look at life inside Featherstone Male Voice Choir

Thinking of joining a choir? Maybe you’ve seen one of our concerts, watched a clip online, or simply miss the joy of singing with others.

Well, here’s a little peek behind the curtain – or rather, through the doors of Wilson Street Methodist Church – to show you what actually happens at a Featherstone Male Voice Choir rehearsal.

A Warm Welcome (and a Round of Applause)

We rehearse on Wednesday and Friday evenings, 7–9pm, in a friendly, familiar church hall just off Station Lane. New faces are always met with a smile – and quite often, a round of applause. If it’s your first night, you won’t be left standing in a corner.

We’ll help you find your section (First Tenor, Second Tenor, Baritone, or Bass), and make sure you’re sitting near one of our many experienced singers. People like Richard, Steve, Stephen, or Peter – all steady voices and kind guides if you’re finding your feet.

Singing, Laughing, Learning

So, what’s it really like? Relaxed and chatty. We like a laugh – and we’re not above a bit of gentle ribbing. (Thanks to our viral rhubarb number, our soloist Bob has been affectionately renamed “RuBob and custard” and he’s not lived it down since.)

But when there’s a concert on the horizon, we knuckle down. Our Musical Director, Edward, leads rehearsals in a straightforward, systematic way – often working with sections individually to help refine parts. Elaine and Mandy, our two brilliant accompanists, are right there with us – not only playing the accompaniment but also guiding us with the vocal lines when needed.

We learn songs by ear, by sheet music, and from recordings – whatever helps each of us get there.

A Brew and a Birthday Song

Halfway through rehearsal, the kitchen hatch opens and we gather for a cuppa. It’s a chance to chat, check in on each other, and maybe sneak a biscuit. We always celebrate birthdays with a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday – another little way we show up for one another.

Because more than anything, FMVC is a community. We sing, yes – but we also support, celebrate, and stand by each other through whatever life brings.

So if you’re wondering what it’s like to join a choir like ours – now you know. All you need to bring is your voice and a willingness to give it a go.
